what did he say?

So, my kid is funny. And I’m sure your kids are funny. In fact I know they’re funny and sweet and say all kinds of clever things!
When I saw this idea Jaxon wasn’t even talking yet…but it’s one I remembered! I started it a few months ago but it only lasted a day or so. But on the 1st I started it again.
What is it? It’s the “Jar of Jaxon”. Yes, that’s the best I could come up with for now!
The idea is to write down the funny, sweet, clever, etc. things that your kids say and place them in a jar. I think the reason it didn’t last long the first time was that I didn’t have the right set-up. Well, now I’ve got the set up!

In the little basket I keep the jar and pre-cut strips of paper (all sizes) and a pen or markers. That way I can go right away and write it down so I don’t forget!

The other day I had the jar out in the living room. Jaxon thought it was like the the Christmas jar where he got to pick a piece of paper out and do something. So here’s how the conversation went:: (and YES I wrote it down and now it’s in the jar)

J: MOMMY, is this for me? What do I get to do today?
S: Well, buddy this jar is not like the Christmas jar. The jar has paper with funny things that you’ve said.
J: MOMMY….I am NOT funny, I’m SERIOUS.
S: (laughing) See… THAT was funny!

It was his tone of voice that was really funny. That night he wanted me to read him all the notes in the jar. I think it made his day. I know having this jar will make me smile for days and years to come!

artwork display & an award

I’m not one of those mothers that saves every piece of paper my child has drawn on. Because I work full time, Jaxon goes to an in-home childcare with a lady that we go to church with. She teaches a cirrucilum and he loves it there. He started there when he was about 4 months old. Once he was around one he started bringing papers home! Needless to say – We have a LOT of papers from this kid and he’s only 3! If it is from a workbook I don’t save it – unless he has done something amazing on it. If it is on construction paper and involves paint, especially finger paint, it’s a keeper. Recently I weeded out some of the stuff we didn’t need to keep.
These are the ones that I decided I wanted to display:
They may not look like much but to me they’re little masterpieces!
This is how I decided to display them. I went to snapfish.com and made a 11×14 poster. I should get it in the mail this week. It was under $10.00 and I LOVE IT!!!

I’ll be sure to post a picture once it’s framed and hung!

Thanks to Carrie at Carrie’s sweet life…..I’ve been awarded my first blog award!

Thank you so much Carrie!!

I’ll be back with my list of who I will pass it on to!
Happy Thursday!

Ps. I am also working on some fabulous pumpkins…..I can’t wait to show you – tomorrow – so come back then!

Wishbone Wishes

One night last week I roasted a whole chicken in the oven. It was yummy. As I was deboning the chicken Jaxon was eating it. I saved the wishbone for us to break and make a wish. I’m not supersticious, but making wishes is fun! I was trying to show him that we have to both pull to see who gets the bigger piece. He quickly corrected me and started blowing on it – like we do with eyelashes. He calls his eyelashes “wishes”! I then felt the need to explain to him that we were being silly and when we have wishes and things we need, we need to talk to God. He said “I know mom”!

If I could make one wish today – I’d wish to be off work and on a vacation with my boys.

So, YOU tell me what would you wish for today??

weekend fun & cool finds

Joey had a basketball trip to go on this weekend with SNU. They go on a pre-season retreat every year. Last year Jaxon and I joined them, but this year none of the other spouses were going so we decided to stay home! We’ve had a lot of fun, but we’re ready for him to be home tomorrow!
Last night we had movie night and had ourselves a little party! Anytime you have movies & m&m’s you know it’s going to be a good night!
We decided to watch movies in my bed instead of on the floor in the living room (that’s where we have movie night every Friday night). When we pulled the covers back this is what I found:
I have the most amazing husband. We’ve been through a lot the past few years, but his love for me is truly unconditional! It was funny because the note that is there is actually a note that he wrote me 2 months before our wedding and everything he said in it was fitting for now! Notice how cool we were in the pic on the right – oh yeah! 1997!! In case your wondering, yes that is a ring. That is my first wedding ring. We got new rings last year for our 10 year that is actually this December….Long Story!!

So….back to my date with my little man:
We jumped on the bed a little, ate m&m’s and watched BOTH movies. Needless to say, Jax stayed up WAY too late! Here we are in between movies!
Part of my thinking in letting him stay up was that maybe, just maybe he’d sleep in a little today. Well, I don’t know about you, but 7:45 is not really sleeping in! It could have been worse. Luckily, I’m a morning person so it was fine!
We decided at 8:30 that we were going to go do our running around for the day. We needed to go to wal-mart and it is ALWAYS best to get there early!
On the way, I saw a man putting out a garage sale sign. I haven’t been to a garage sale in years. I’ve seen so many cool finds and ideas from garage sailing on some of the blogs I read, and it’s peaked my interest.
Well, I totally lucked out this morning! We pulled up and immediately I spotted MANY things I wanted. I quickly started a stash. There were so many cool things. Come to find out, the lady owns booth space in the serendipity market here in Edmond. She is closing down her booth and is selling everything!! SCORE!!! Too bad I didn’t have a truck and a few hundred dollars to spend. There were so many affordable things that I could have made over….if only! BUT….I didn’t walk away empty handed! The couple was so nice and let Jaxon pick one toy to take. It was just a great experience. The lady asked if she could call me before her next sale! I’m so excited! Okay, on to the loot::::
a quilt rack – I forgot to take a picture of it. It’s wooden.
a table – I’m painting it black, it will go beside our bed. Our bed is tall so this will be perfect!
I forgot to take a picture of this before I started painting it… It was silver!
These things have not been altered yet:
a bird cage – $22.00 in the store, $8.00 today
a vintage lamp – she was selling this for $20.00 in her store, today it was $8.00
two sconces, a lamp base without the hardware and three frames
I was a happy girl! I also got some really cute pumpkins at Kirkland’s! I’ll have to do a little house tour soon to show you all my goodies in their new home! Stay tuned!

Somedays….

I just give up! If this is what he wanted to wear today…so be it! I did pack shorts for him to wear to the park, becuase, well pajama pants in 95 degree weather is just not very appopriate! It will be interesting to see what he is wearing when I pick him up!

Speaking of Superhero’s….. I was looking on YouTube this morning. I cliked on the link from Sarah’s recent post and found this::

Jaxon watched this about 12.5 times this morning! On the way to work he said “Mommy, we have superman costume, spiderman, and batman at home, but no Jesus costume”. Hmmm…

"No Jesus?"

I was going through a basket of pictures last night and found these from the last three years. I think they are hilarious…so I had to post them!

where am I?”

Crazy smile…I just wonder what he was thinking!
I’m sure he was saying “in the beginnning…”

Jaxon was “helping” me get them on the computer this morning, and was making comments about them. He knows the memory verse from this year – Genesis 1:1, so he recited that. He asked me what they talked about when he was a baby and I told him “Noah”. Then he pointed to the 2007 picture and wanted to know what it said. So I said, “It say’s Know Jesus”. He said “NO, Jesus? Aww, but I love Jesus” I couldn’t help but laugh! I was trying to explain that there are two different ways to use the word “No,Know”. Pretty confusing for a three year old! Oh, I love that boy!

recipes for a rainy week

There are many recipes I’ve been wanting to try. Monday I decided that I would try as many as possible this week.

Monday night I made Green Chili Enchiladas from Patti at Patti’s Pantry. They were very good…we had the leftovers tonight! I also made my homemade salsa, I will post the recipe for that later…just remind me!

Tuesday for a treat I made mini candy apples from little momma and company. Kiley and Terra came over to help. Kiley is Jaxon’s girlfriend!

Tuesday for dinner I made a recipe that my friend Terra gave me. It was SO good. I don’t know what it is called, so I’ll just call it Yummy Chicken.

Yummy Chicken
*6-8 chicken tenders or 2 chicken breasts- place in the bottom of a baking dish
*season – I used minced garlic and onion, seasoned salt, and lots of pepper
*top with sliced swiss cheese
*cover with one can cream of chicken soup (I use the healthy request)
*sprinkle with bread crumbs (I also crushed some croutons)
*melt 1/2 stick butter and pour over top
*bake at 350 for 45 minutes….YUMMY and so tender!!
I served with steamed rice and vegetables!!

Tonight I made brownie swirled peanut butter oreo cookies. Oh yes I did….they are amazing, except for the second batch that I burned!!

This is one of the best salads I’ve had in a while.
I made this when we had company last week. No recipe really…I just marinated some chicken tenders in tequila lime marinade. I mixed some spinach and romaine together with some chopped celery and green onions. I had little cups with all the toppings, like a salad bar! Cherry tomoatos, a few different cheeses, turkey bacon, apples, tropical salsa, etc. Then I made homeade ranch (from the packet, made with low-fat buttermilk, fat-free mayo and light sour cream) and homeade cilantro citrus vinagrette (also from a packet)!!! SO good…make it!!

Yes, I had a little bit of fun with Picnik tonight!! My laptop is on the fritz and it has my photoshop on it…I needed an alternative and I had fun!
Stay tuned for the reveal of my big art project on Friday!!!

the old man, the fat boy & the geisha

Last Friday night we went on a family date! We took Jaxon to Shogun. We had been once before but he was around one, so he didn’t really get it. He loved it and we had so much fun!! I’m sure most of you know what it is, but they cook the food on a big grill at your table and put on a show full of flying shrimp and flaming onion volcanoes!
You can order your drink in a collectible ceramic figure. Jaxon wanted the little “fat boy”. When his water arrived, he thought it was the coolest thing ever. He really wanted me to get “the lady” which is really called a geisha. Well, I’m definitely not a geisha, but I ordered a Shirley temple to go w/ my lady! Of course Joe had to get one too, his was the “old man”!

So now we have this little collection that WILL NOT be displayed in my house. Maybe next time we have chicken stir fry we’ll pull them out!
They’re a little creepy if you ask me!

See ya next year, Karate

I couldn’t write this last night because I didn’t really know what exactly to write. Karate was a little traumatic for us. It was not good for Jaxon or for me. We both left with tears in our eyes. His tears were because he was sad, confused, angry, and overwhelmed. My tears were because, well I don’t really know why, too many emotions to count. When I picked Jax up he was SO excited to go and he was such a big boy. When we got there and the class started he was obviously overwhelmed. There were other parents there observing. The instructor asked me to take my shoes off and to come out on the floor to help him do the splits. Jax freaked. He was trying to be a big boy and participate, but he just wanted to take it all in. I knew it was a bad idea, but did it because the instructor asked me to. So, here I am on the floor with the class, in my black suit pants and grey sweater with no shoes on. My child is freaking out while all the other children are doing exactly what they’re being asked to do. I started to get really hot. I could feel my face getting red. I backed off and just stood near to give Jaxon a chance, this was after all his very first experience with anything like this, and he likes his independence.
It wasn’t but a few moments later Jaxon started crying and ran to me saying he wanted to go home. I was ok with that, but didn’t want to be rude and just up and leave. Another instructor came out to the floor and asked if I’d come with him to talk. Sure! Anything to get all the eyes off me!
So, we went in this little room and Jax had calmed down at this point. The instructor was trying to get Jax to sit in a specific chair so that he & I could visit for a moment. Jax was being a typical 3 year old boy who is usually weary of people he doesn’t know, so he wasn’t really listening to the man. He wasn’t really listening to me for that matter. The man went on to say that my reasons (that we had earlier discussed) for wanting to enroll Jax in the class were VERY valid. He continued and pointed out that Jax doesn’t show me much respect, or listen to instructions well. Ok, I know these things, however I do not need a stranger to point them out to me. These are things that we work on every day in our household. He was very clear that I should bring Jax back today and force him to get used to the idea of being in that environment. As I stated yesterday, and to him, I will not force my children to do something extracurricular that we have not committed to. So, we finished up our little meeting.
When we walked out of the office, the class was playing with the nun chucks or the “Hai-Ya’s“! Jaxon was ready to go back out there, but the instructor asked him to come off of the floor and told him he could do that in class tomorrow. Again, Jaxon got upset. I agreed that IF Jaxon wanted to come back tomorrow, he would have to participate in the full class. Then I wrangled my screaming child, carried him in one hand, my purse a karate magazine and two bottles of water in the other, to get his shoes. The fit did not stop there….but that’s where I’ll end this story!
I’ve thought so much about this in the last 20 hours. Part of me feels guilty for thinking that he was ready for something like that. I was upset with the instructor, although I know he was just doing what he knew how. I was embarrassed with the fit that he threw and all the eyes that were on me. I feel bad that Jax was so excited and then so letdown within an hours time (although, that is real life). I learned that that type of karate is just too serious for MY 3 year old. I learned that I know my son better than anyone else and of course we have some things to work on and that’s ok. I learned that making up with a 3 year old – when he is ready – after throwing a fit for an hour after being home – can be REALLY fun!! I love my Jaxon and needless to say….We’ve decided as a family that maybe we’ll try again in a year or so, or maybe never!

On a MUCH lighter note (I’m surprised if you’ve made it this far)….. Please go visit Mom Spark today. Mom Spark is a new blog that is for Mommies, Mommies to be someday, or anyone who wants to have a little fun! I am going to be contributing over there and today is my FIRST post there. So, go see for yourself…it will be fun, I promise!! Be sure to leave some comment love…I could use it today!
